How boutique consultancies over-invest in sales assets and under-invest in the sales system
The pattern
Placeholder content — to be replaced. Boutique consultancies led by technical founders tend to pour budget into visible sales assets — decks, one-pagers, a polished website, a CRM — while leaving the actual sales system undefined: who calls whom, with what cadence, using which qualification criteria, and how losses are reviewed.
What an asset is, and what a system is
Placeholder content — to be replaced. An asset is a thing you can hold. A system is the set of decisions, cadences, and feedback loops that puts the asset in front of the right buyer at the right moment. Firms buy assets and assume the system will emerge. It does not.
What to do instead
Placeholder content — to be replaced. Before commissioning another asset, write down the system it is supposed to serve: the target buyer, the trigger event, the channel, the cadence, the qualification bar, and the loss-review ritual. If you cannot answer those six questions, no asset will close the gap.
